29 Days: Giving Back

Today at the conference we had a guest speaker talking about technology solutions to bring payments capabilities to the unbanked and ultra poor. Our group president, introducing our guest, made an empassioned case for access to payments being a fundamental human right. It was moving and hearing our guest speak about efforts to empower third world women to gain a degree of freedom and self agency by controlling access to money was heart-wrenchingly inspiring.

Then, to cap the session, our head of human resources took the stage to announce that my company partnered in a philanthropic project with a not for profit micro-loan facilitator to bring funds to underserved and impoverished peoples around the world: kiva.org. That partnership includes my company giving every person in attendance at the conference $25 to loan to a project of their choice through Kiva.

I was thrilled to provide the last bit needed to fully fund a loan to a woman in Peru who is an artisan needing $850 to support her small business that feeds her family. What an honor to be a tiny part of her story.

Technology giving back to the world. One amazingly good thing.
